What did Smithsonian do when they needed to provide detail and depth to an exhibit? They worked with VRex Productions, to make a 3D exhibit that was easy to view and wheelchair accessible. Ellen Dorn, Director of Exhibitions at the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building was interested in an exhibit from the Museum of Chinese. Although she liked the concept of the exhibit, the design did not meet the Smithsonian’s accessibility criteria. The original design of the exhibit made it very difficult to see the objects, especially for children or people in wheelchairs. VRex Productions took 3D stereoscopic pictures of all the objects and designed a kiosk to display a 3D slide show of the pieces of work.

The 3D Kiosk consisted of two stations; one for a standing adult and a lower one for a child or someone in a wheelchair. Visitors from all ages took advantage of it, stopping to take a look. The Smithsonian received very positive comments. The kiosk added a dimension to the exhibit experience that did not exist and allowed the Smithsonian to make the exhibit accessible to all. According to Ms. Dorn, “The VRex production team was a pleasure to work with…They asked lots of questions, making sure that they understood our goal; they reviewed their progress with us, asking for input; and they delivered a top-notch product that met our needs. The VRex solution allowed me to bring an important exhibit to our building, which I may not have done without the benefit or the kiosk you designed and fabricated for me.”
