On March 4, 2003 the 3D Consortium was founded by five leading Japanese companies: Sharp Corporation, Sony Corporation, SANYO Electric Co., LTD, NTT DATA Corporation and Itochu Corporation to establish a large market and industry for 3D Stereoscopic Imaging. The consortium members, already numbering more than 100 are comprised of hardware manufacturers, software vendors, production studios, broadcasters and universities. The consortium so far is comprised of members based in Japan, but will accept international members in the coming months.

The Consortium is also spearheading a new educational campaign to promote stereoscopic 3D imaging in both hardware and software fields. Stereoscopic 3D imaging is superior to 2D planar imaging by providing viewers of realistic positional relationships in space, leading to a more realistic, immersive experience. This would be useful in diverse fields, ranging from industrial design such as CAD to entertainment to education. The ultimate goal of this Consortium is to generate interest and knowledge of 3D technology, creating new industries and markets.
